November 3, 1978 The Commonwealth of Dominica gained its independence from the United Kingdom.

Dominica is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea located between the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. It is approximately 290 square miles in size with a population of 73,000. Approximately 87% of the population is black and 80% are Roman Catholic.
